Below you'll find a list of the most common questions we’ve come across at EvoDerma. If you have any further inquiries, please contact our Customer Care Department.
How does LUMI™ work?
LUMI™ uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology. IPL has been tested by dermatologists and scientists and has been proven as an effective method for removing unwanted hair. Please refer to our How It Works section to learn more about IPL technology.
Can men use LUMI™?
Yes, LUMI™ is effective for both men and women. See our For Men section to learn more.
Is LUMI™ right for me?
LUMI™ provides permanent hair reduction on most skin and hair types. However, you should not use LUMI™ if you have a naturally dark skin tone. LUMI™ works best on people who have a combination of light skin and dark hair. Using LUMI™ on red hair may show some results, but white, grey or blonde hair usually doesn’t respond to treatment. See our Is It For Me? section in order to determine if LUMI™ is right for you.
Can I use LUMI™ if I am pregnant or nursing?
We do not recommend that you use LUMI™ if you are pregnant or nursing.
Will LUMI™ effectively removes white, grey or blonde hairs?
LUMI™ works best on darker hair. White, grey or blonde hair does not respond to the treatments as effectively. Consult the LUMI™ Skin Tone Chart to see if your skin and hair are compatible.
Will LUMI™ work if I have dark brown or black skin?
LUMI™ will not work on naturally dark skin. Treating dark skin with LUMI™ can result in adverse effects such as burns, blisters and skin color changes. Please consult the LUMI™ Skin Tone Chart to find out if your hair and skin tones are compatible.
Is LUMI™ safe?
LUMI™ has been tested and approved according to the highest safety standards for a home-use device. When used as directed, LUMI™ is a safe method for the removal of unwanted hair.
Does LUMI™ hurt?
Unlike waxing, laser or electrolysis where your hair is pulled out or electrocuted, LUMI™ uses wide spectrum light-energy to target the hair follicle, causing the hair to fall out naturally. When LUMI™ is used properly; you will feel a mild sensation of warmth and tingling after each light pulse. For your convenience, LUMI™ allows you to adjust the light pulse intensity level in accordance with your skin sensitivity.
Are there any side effects when using LUMI™?
Side effects are extremely rare if LUMI™ is used according to the instructions provided in the user manual. Certain clinical studies have reported some redness around the hair shaft and slight swelling. These side effects usually subside within an hour after treatment.
What are the pre-treatment steps before using LUMI™?
Before a LUMI™ treatment session, the area to be treated should be cleaned with mild soap and water, and the hair shaved down to the surface of the skin. It is also important to avoid sun exposure on any areas you wish to treat, at least four weeks prior to the treatment.
Do I need to wear safety glasses or goggles when using LUMI™?
The light pulse emitted by LUMI™ resembles that of a camera flash. Eye sensitivity to light can vary from person to person; EvoDerma recommends that you wear the included IPL Protective Eyewear every time you use the device. The Built-In Skin Tone Sensor provides an extra safeguard to ensure that LUMI™ will only flash when it is in contact with your skin.
Why can’t I use LUMI™ if I was exposed to the sun or currently have a suntan?
Do not use LUMI™ on tanned skin or after sun exposure. Tanned skin, particularly following sun exposure, contains large quantities of the pigment called melanin. This applies to all skin types and complexions, including those that don’t seem to tan quickly. The presence of large quantities of melanin exposes the skin to higher risk of adverse effects when using LUMI™ such as burns, blisters, and skin color changes.
Is long-term use of LUMI™ hazardous to my skin?
There are no reported side effects or damage due to long-term use of Intense Pulsed Light devices. The evidence is well documented and is based on over 15 years of use in aesthetic medicine.
How long does a single treatment session take?
The amount of time required for each session varies depending on the area of the body being treated. Two full legs can take up to 30 minutes, while both underarms could be less than 5 minutes. Because LUMI™ plugs in to a standard electrical outlet, it can be used for as long as needed to complete a full hair removal session.
Where on my body can I use LUMI™?
LUMI™ has been designed for unwanted body hair and works best on the following areas:
- Legs
- Underarms and arms
- Back and shoulders
- Chest
- Bikini line
- Feet
Can LUMI™ be used on the face, head or neck?
It is not recommended to use LUMI™ on the face, head or anywhere above the neckline.
How often should I use LUMI™?
Schedule your LUMI™ treatments every two weeks for the first three to four sessions. If hair still grows back after these sessions, you can proceed with treatments until the desired results are achieved. The total amount of treatments you will require depends on your skin tone and hair color as well as your hair’s growth cycle.
When will I see results from using LUMI™?
In general, you will see noticeable results after two to four treatments with LUMI™. Hair reduction results vary from one person to another; please consult the Results section of this website for more information.
Are the results permanent?
The results achieved by using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology are progressively permanent. If the device has targeted a hair follicle while in its growth stage (Anagen), the hair will not grow back. Please refer to the How It Works section for more information about IPL technology and the hair growth cycle.
What will my skin look like during treatment?
The skin retains its normal appearance during treatment with LUMI™ for almost all users. A small number of users might see some redness or swelling, which usually subsides after an hour.
How can I maximize or accelerate my treatment results?
To maximize hair removal results when using LUMI™, it is best to maintain a two-week interval between treatment sessions as well as using the provided LUMINANTE™ Lotion after each treatment. All the necessary steps are outlined in the user manual. If you have begun using LUMI™ and your skin is responding well to the treatments, you can increase the intensity level for subsequent treatments. We recommend you increase the intensity no more than one level at a time in order to properly evaluate how your skin will react. If you begin experiencing discomfort during treatments, reduce the intensity level. As a safety precaution, the intensity of the light pulse is limited to the first level each time you use a new Disposable Lamp Cartridge. The higher intensity levels will be unlocked as you progress with your treatments. Please consult the Power Level Chart on the How To Use It page for a more detailed description of this feature.
How often do I have to replace the IPL light?
The IPL light lasts for up to 2,000 pulses, which is usually sufficient to treat your entire body for 1-3 treatment sessions.
Why does my hair still appear to be growing even though I treated that area?
After treating your skin with LUMI™, the hair will take about two weeks to naturally be ejected from the body. During these two weeks, the hair will appear to be growing, but, in actuality, the hair is going through the process of being ejected or pushed out of the body. After the first few treatments, hair that does grow back will be finer and lighter. Continue the pre-treatment steps and stick with your treatment schedule to achieve the best long-term results. See the Results section for more information.
What is the cost of LUMI™ compared to similar in-office hair removal treatments?
Based on North American averages, the cost of professional treatments for your entire body ranges between $7,000 and $12,000 for a complete series of sessions. The price of LUMI™ is under $700.
Does LUMI™ come with a warranty?
LUMI™ comes with a 1-year warranty on parts and manufacturing.
Will LUMI™ work if I have a lot of freckles?
We don’t recommend using LUMI™ on areas with many freckles, moles or other skin irregularities, since these darker spots may absorb LUMI™’s light instead of the hairs. If you only have a couple of freckles, you can cover them with a flesh-coloured bandage and use LUMI™ as directed.
